My passion in dress-making

Impossible is nothing… or my trip to fashion design

March 18, 2017 by marina

Hello! As I mentioned some time ago I have a pause in sewing and do not have many running projects so far. But it does not mean that I do nothing. At the moment I am taking a course of fashion design in Fashion Design School. Recently I have completed first three months of a year course and would like to share my results with you.
I took me sometime to convince myself to start it, because fashion design means not only sewing and pattern making but also drawing and painting. Honestly, I have never considered myself as a person who can paint. Painting lessons in school time were a horror for me, I was pretty bad. Since then I never touched a pencil. However, I got these three months as a present and of course started it immediately.
I had to take a lot of time for painting tasks during the course, plus some external factors and honestly, I did not make it in three months, but longer. However, it does not matter for results.
Before starting the course I did not have any ideas how to draw a human figure, but of course tried and never actually succeeded. During the first weeks of the course I finally learn a theory about how to draw a human body…

this is how I did it before

It is not ideal, but I think progress is significant. Now I am fully convinced that everybody can learn it!
Except painting and drawing the course contains other lessons, for example about pattern making and how to create a collection. Of course not everything was so hard for me as drawing, I did not have problems with simple pattern making and moving darts, however, at the end of the third month we had to construct something more complicated like Tomoko Nakamichi style.

What else have I learn? I know now how to make collages. Here you can compare my first collage and two month later )))

But the most fun is creating a collections, this also includes history of fashion. It is so exciting and inspiring to create dresses in different styles. And I have learned that fantasy can be trained and developed!
The entire course is for a year, I completed only a small part of it and I love this fascinating trip to a fashion design. if you are still skeptical that you can do something which you never done before – don’t be! Everything is possible!
